What We Do
We are an organization committed to providing support, education, and advocacy to individuals with brain injury, their families, and caregivers. We believe that understanding the nature of brain injury is crucial to promoting recovery and improving the quality of life of those affected.
The brain is the control center of our body, responsible for regulating everything from our breathing and digestion to our thoughts and emotions. Unfortunately, brain injury can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time, and it can have a significant impact on one's cognitive, physical, behavioral, and emotional functioning.
According to statistics, brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, affecting at least 2.8 million people each year. Even more alarming is the fact that Americans are more likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury than to be diagnosed with other serious medical conditions such as spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and breast cancer combined.
Brain injury can range in severity from mild to severe, with symptoms that can appear right away or take days or even weeks to show up. Each brain injury is unique and can vary from person to person, making it challenging to diagnose and treat effectively.
At Brain Injury Alliance of Wisconsin, we provide a variety of resources and programs to help individuals throughout their recovery journey, from support groups and educational workshops to advocacy services and legal referrals. We believe that by working together, we can help individuals with brain injury achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
We understand that brain injury is a complex and multifaceted condition, which is why we have provided information on different types of brain injury, including acquired brain injury (ABI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). ABI can result from a variety of causes, including strokes, tumors, infections, and lack of oxygen to the brain. TBI, on the other hand, is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the brain's normal function.
